Intersection and development of surfaces are fundamental concepts in Engineering Graphics and Design. Understanding these principles allows us to accurately represent and create 3D objects using 2D drawings. This is particularly crucial in South Africa, where manufacturing, construction, and engineering projects rely heavily on precise designs and fabrication. Think about the construction of bridges, buildings, or even the manufacturing of corrugated iron sheets – all require accurate intersection and development techniques. Incorrectly developed surfaces can lead to wasted materials, structural weaknesses, and ultimately, project failure.

2.1 Intersection of Surfaces The line of intersection between two surfaces represents the points where the surfaces meet. Finding this line accurately is essential for representing the object correctly and for further processes like welding or joining. Methods for Finding the Line of Intersection: Edge View Method: When one of the surfaces has an edge view in one of the orthographic projections, the intersection becomes relatively easy to determine.

Cutting Plane Method: This is the most versatile method. A series of cutting planes are used to slice through both surfaces. The intersections of the cutting plane with each surface form lines, and the points where these lines intersect are points on the line of intersection between the two surfaces. The cutting planes should be chosen strategically to simplify the process (e.g., horizontal planes, vertical planes).
