Lesson summary

Mathematical Literacy equips us with the skills to confidently navigate everyday situations involving numbers and data. Measurement, specifically understanding perimeter, area, and volume, is a cornerstone of this. From calculating the amount of fencing needed for a garden to determining the amount of paint required for a room, or understanding the capacity of a water tank, these concepts are essential for informed decision-making in personal, professional, and community contexts. For South African learners, understanding measurement is critical for budgeting, home improvement, understanding local government planning, and participating effectively in economic activities.

Lesson notes

2.1 Perimeter: Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a two-dimensional shape. It's like walking around the edge of a field – the total distance you walk is the perimeter. The units of perimeter are the same as the units of length (mm, cm, m, km).

Rectangle: Perimeter = 2 (length + width) or P = 2(l + w)

Square: Perimeter = 4 side or P = 4s Triangle: Perimeter = side1 + side2 + side3 or P = a + b + c Circle (Circumference): Circumference = π diameter or C = πd, where π (pi) is approximately 3.14
