This week focuses on consolidating your understanding and practical skills necessary for the upcoming Practical Assessment Task (PAT). The PAT is a crucial component of your Grade 12 Mechanical Technology mark, assessing your ability to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical workshop environment. A well-prepared PAT not only boosts your final grade but also equips you with valuable skills applicable to various technical fields, contributing to South Africa’s skilled workforce. 2.1 Measuring Instruments and Accuracy: Vernier Calipers: Understanding the main scale, vernier scale, and how to read accurate measurements (both inside, outside, and depth measurements). Accuracy depends on the resolution of the instrument. Remember to account for zero error. Vernier calipers are widely used in South African workshops for their versatility.

Micrometers: Principle of operation (screw thread mechanism). Understanding the thimble, sleeve, and ratchet. Proper zeroing procedure is crucial. Micrometers offer higher precision than vernier calipers.

Steel Rules: Understanding the graduations (mm and inches). Steel rules are used for general measurements where high precision is not required.

Dial Test Indicators (DTI): Used for measuring small variations in dimensions or alignment. Understand how to set up and read a DT
