Performance objectives

Lesson summary

This week focuses on consolidating and applying all Mathematical Literacy skills learned throughout the year through integrated, real-life scenarios, mirroring the structure and complexity of the final examination. This isn't just about memorizing formulas; it’s about developing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to navigate everyday financial, social, and civic issues in South Africa. The scenarios we'll explore directly relate to situations learners will encounter after leaving school, such as managing personal finances, understanding data presented in the media, interpreting maps and plans, and making informed decisions about service contracts.

Lesson notes

This week's focus is not on introducing new concepts, but on integrating existing knowledge and applying it to exam-style questions. Here's a recap of key areas and how they often intertwine: Finance: Budgeting, income and expenditure, simple and compound interest, loans, investments, taxation (PAYE, VAT), exchange rates, inflation.

Data Handling: Collecting, organizing, summarizing, and representing data (tables, graphs, pie charts, histograms), interpreting data, calculating measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), range, and probability.

Measurement: Perimeter, area, volume, capacity, converting units, scale drawings, maps, plans, time, temperature. Maps, Plans and other representations of the physical world: Scale, distance, direction, elevation, interpreting symbols and keys, working with floor plans.

Important Integration Points: Finance and Data: Analyzing budgeting data to identify trends in spending habits. Comparing investment options using data presented in tables and graphs. Using statistical measures to understand financial risks.

Measurement and Finance: Calculating the cost of materials for a construction project based on measurements from a plan. Determining the optimal size of a garden based on budget constraints and available space.

Data and Maps: Using data to analyse crime rates in different areas of a town, represented on a map. Calculating distances and travel times using map scales and data on speed limits.

Worked example

Example 1: Budgeting and Currency Conversion

Scenario: Thando earns a gross monthly salary of R15,

0. She allocates 20% of her net salary to rent, 15% to groceries, and 10% to transport. She also wants to save $50 per month for a trip to the USA. The current exchange rate is R19.50 per $1.

a) Calculate Thando's net monthly salary.

b) Calculate the amount she spends on rent, groceries, and transport.

c) Calculate the Rand value of her monthly savings in US dollars.

d) Calculate the amount of money Thando has left after covering these expenses.
