This week, we are diving into the exciting world of maps, directions, and finding where things are! This topic, 'Space and Shape: Position, Direction, and Mapping,' is all about understanding the world around us. In our daily lives in South Africa, we use these skills all the time without even thinking about it. When you tell a friend how to get from the classroom to the soccer field, you are using directions. When you look for the sugar in the kitchen cupboard, you are thinking about its position. When your family drives to visit Gogo in another province, they use a map (maybe on a phone!).
A. Positional Language: Where is it? Before we can use a map, we need to know how to talk about where things are. We use special 'position words' to do this. These words help us be very clear.
On top of / Under: The book is on top of the desk. The shoes are under the desk.
In front of / Behind: The chalkboard is in front of the learners. The bookshelf is behind the teacher's desk.
Next to / Beside: The sharpener is next to the pencil case. Thabo sits beside Nomsa.
Between: The ruler is between the book and the eraser.
Left / Right: It is important to know your own left and right! Your teacher will help you practice this. The door is on the left side of the classroom.
