This week, we are continuing our revision for the upcoming Life Skills exam.
Our focus is on a very important topic: Healthy Living and Safety. In South Africa, knowing how to look after our bodies and stay safe is a skill we use every single day. When we choose to eat healthy foods like pap, morogo, and fruit, we give our bodies the energy to learn in class and play soccer with our friends. When we remember to wash our hands, we stop germs from spreading in our homes and schools. Knowing the rules for crossing the road helps us get to the spaza shop or to school without getting hurt.
This section covers the essential information we need to remember about staying healthy and safe.
A. Healthy Eating: Fuel for Your Body Think of your body like a car. A car needs petrol to go. Your body needs healthy food to give it energy to run, play, think, and grow. Eating a mix of different good foods is called a balanced diet. We can sort food into different food groups: Carbohydrates (Energy Foods): These foods give you 'go' power! They give you energy for the whole day.
Examples: Pap, bread, rice, samp, potatoes, sweet potatoes. Why? When you run around during break time, it's the energy from carbohydrates that keeps you going.
Proteins (Body-Building Foods): These foods help you grow strong muscles and bones. They also help your body repair itself if you get a cut.
Examples: Chicken, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, beans, lentils, amasi. Why? To grow taller and stronger, your body needs protein to build new parts.
Fruits and Vegetables (Protective Foods): These foods are full of vitamins and minerals. They act like a shield to protect your body from getting sick.
Examples: Oranges, bananas, apples, spinach (morogo), cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, butternut. Why? Eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables helps your immune system fight off colds and flu.
Fats and Oils (Energy Storage): These give us extra energy and help our brains. We only need a small amount.
Examples: Cooking oil, butter, margarine, avocado, nuts.
