Lesson summary

This week, we dive into the exciting world of Data Handling. Data handling is like being a detective! It's the process we use to collect information (data), sort it out so it makes sense, show it in a picture-like way, and then use it to answer questions. In South Africa, we see data everywhere. When we vote, the results are shown in graphs. A spaza shop owner needs to know which cooldrinks are most popular to buy more of them. Doctors track how many children get their vaccinations. Learning to handle data helps us understand the world around us, make smart choices, and present information clearly to others. This is a very important skill for your exams and for everyday life.

What is Data? Data is just a collection of information, usually facts or numbers. For example, if we ask everyone in our class what their favourite South African fruit is, the list of their answers is our data.

Step 1: Collecting and Organising Data with Tally Marks Once we have our information, we need to organise it so we can understand it. A great way to do this is with tally marks. Tally marks are a quick way of keeping count in groups of five. One mark ( | ) means

1. Four marks with a line through them ( |||| ) means 5.
