Lesson summary

This week, we are diving into the exciting world of Data Handling! Data is just a fancy word for information. Every day in South Africa, we see data all around us – on the news telling us the weather, in the shops showing which products are on sale, and even when we talk about our favourite soccer teams like Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates. Learning to handle data helps us become 'data detectives'. We can collect information, make sense of it, and show it to others in a clear way using pictures and graphs. This is a very important skill for understanding the world.

Lesson notes

What is Data Handling? Data handling is a process with a few simple steps. Think of it like baking. You need to follow the steps in order!

Step 1: Collect the information (the ingredients).

Step 2: Organise the information (mix the ingredients).

Step 3: Represent the information (bake the cake and put it on a plate for everyone to see).

Step 4: Interpret the information (talk about how delicious the cake is!).

Step 1 & 2: Collecting and Organising Data with Tally Marks and Tables When we have a lot of information, we need a quick way to count it. We use tally marks. A tally is a small vertical line ( | ) that stands for 'one'. When we get to five, we draw a line through the first four to make a 'gate'. This makes counting in fives easy! | Number | Tally Mark | | :----: | :--------: | | 1 | | | | 2 | || | | 3 | ||| | | 4 | |||| | | 5 | |||| |
