Lesson summary

This week, we are becoming 'data detectives'! We will focus on data handling, which is a very important skill. Data handling is all about collecting, sorting, and showing information in a way that is easy to understand. In our daily lives in South Africa, we see data everywhere. We see it in the prices at the spaza shop, the scores of our favourite soccer team like Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates, and even when we talk about the different kinds of weather we have in our province. Learning to handle data helps us make smart choices and understand the world around us. This week is also important because we are preparing for our exams.

Lesson notes

What is Data? Data is a collection of information, usually facts or numbers. For example, if we ask everyone in our class what their favourite fruit is, the list of all their answers is our data.

Step 1: Collecting and Organising Data with Tally Marks First, we need to collect our data. We can do this by asking questions (a survey) or by observing things. Once we have the answers, we need to organise them so they are not just a long, messy list. We use a tally chart for this. A tally mark is a straight line ( | ) we make to count something. The most important rule is that when we get to five, we make a group by drawing a line through the first four marks. This makes counting much faster! | Tally Marks | Count | | --- | --- | | | | 1 | | || | 2 | | ||| | 3 | | |||| | 4 | | |||| | 5 |
