Introduction: This week, we become 'Data Detectives'! Data handling is all about collecting information (we call this 'data'), organising it so it makes sense, and then showing it in a way that is easy to understand, like with pictures or graphs. This is a very important skill, not just for Mathematics, but for everyday life in South Africa. Imagine you have a spaza shop. You would want to know which cool drinks are the most popular so you can order more of them. That's data handling! Or think about our favourite soccer teams like the Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates. We can use data handling to show how many people in our class support each team.
What is Data? Data is a collection of facts or pieces of information. For example, the number of learners in our class, the different colours of cars in the school parking lot, or our favourite fruits are all data. How do we collect and organise data? We often start by asking a question.
Let's ask: "What is your favourite season?" We can collect answers using a survey. Then, we use a tally chart to organise the answers. A tally mark is a small line ( | ) we make to count something. When we get to five, we draw a line through the first four marks ( |||| ). This makes it easy to count in fives.
