This week, we are becoming 'Data Detectives' and 'Exam Champions'! We will focus on the important skill of Data Handling, which is all about collecting, organising, and understanding information. This is a vital skill because we see information presented in charts and graphs everywhere – on the TV news, in shops showing which products are popular, and even when tracking our favourite sports team's scores. For a South African learner, understanding data helps make sense of our diverse communities. We can create graphs about the different home languages in our class, the most popular local fruits sold at the market, or how classmates travel to school.
What is Data Handling? Data handling is a process. Think of it like being a detective. You find clues (that's the data), you sort your clues (that's organising), you display your clues on a board (that's representing), and then you solve the mystery (that's analysing).
Collecting Data: This is the starting point. We ask a question to gather information (data).
For example: "What is your favourite local fruit?" Organising Data with Tally Marks: When we get many answers, we need to organise them. Tally marks are a quick way to count. We draw one line ( | ) for each answer. When we get to the fifth one, we draw a line across the first four ( |||| ). This makes it easy to count in fives!
