This week, we will delve deeper into understanding whole numbers, focusing specifically on place value up to at least thousands and performing basic operations (addition and subtraction) with larger numbers. Understanding place value is crucial because it's the foundation for all other mathematical concepts. Imagine you are helping your family manage their monthly budget – you need to understand the value of each digit in the amounts of money you're spending and saving. Similarly, when calculating distances on a road trip, or measuring ingredients for a vetkoek recipe, a strong understanding of place value and operations is essential.
Place Value: Place value refers to the value of a digit based on its position in a number. In the number 3456, the digit 3 is in the thousands place, the digit 4 is in the hundreds place, the digit 5 is in the tens place, and the digit 6 is in the units/ones place.
Units/Ones: The rightmost digit represents the number of individual units.
Tens: The digit to the left of the units represents the number of groups of ten.
Hundreds: The digit to the left of the tens represents the number of groups of one hundred.
Thousands: The digit to the left of the hundreds represents the number of groups of one thousand.
Decomposing Numbers: Decomposing a number means breaking it down into its place value components. This helps us understand the value of each digit and is crucial for performing operations like addition and subtraction.
Example: The number 5289 can be decomposed as 5000 + 200 + 80 +
9. Addition of Whole Numbers: Addition involves combining two or more numbers to find their total, or sum. We can use column addition, which involves aligning the numbers vertically according to their place value and adding each column separately, starting from the units/ones place. When the sum of a column is greater than 9, we need to regroup (carry over) the tens digit to the next column.

Subtraction of Whole Numbers: Subtraction involves finding the difference between two numbers. We can use column subtraction, which involves aligning the numbers vertically according to their place value and subtracting each column separately, starting from the units/ones place. When the digit in the top number is smaller than the digit in the bottom number, we need to regroup (borrow) from the next column to the left.
