Lesson summary

This week, we dive into the exciting world of number patterns and relationships. Patterns are all around us in South Africa! We see them in the beautiful designs of Ndebele houses, the intricate beadwork of Zulu and Xhosa cultures, the rhythm of Amapiano music, and even in nature, like the spiral of a protea flower. In mathematics, understanding patterns helps us to make predictions, solve problems, and understand how numbers relate to each other. This skill is a foundation for more advanced maths topics like algebra. We will focus on identifying rules in number sequences and using 'flow diagrams' to see how an input number changes into an output number.

Lesson notes

What is a Number Pattern? A number pattern is a sequence or list of numbers that are arranged according to a specific rule. Our job as 'maths detectives' is to find the rule!

Key Terms: Rule: The instruction that tells you how to get from one term to the next. Patterns with a Constant Difference This is the most common type of pattern in Grade

4. It means we add or subtract the same number every time to get to the next term.

How to find the rule: Look at the first two terms.

Ask yourself: "How do I get from the first number to the second? Do I add or subtract?" Check if this same rule works to get from the second term to the third, and so on.
