This week we are going to learn about healthy eating habits. Eating well is not just about growing big and strong; it's about having the energy to play with your friends, concentrate in class, and feel good every day. In South Africa, many people face challenges related to food, like not having enough nutritious food or eating too much unhealthy food. By understanding what healthy eating means, we can make better choices for ourselves and our families and contribute to a healthier community. This topic helps us understand the importance of making informed food choices, which is essential for our overall well-being and growth.
Healthy eating means eating a variety of foods from different food groups to give your body the energy and nutrients it needs.
Let's break down the key ideas: Food Groups: There are five main food groups. Each group provides different nutrients that your body needs.
Fruits and Vegetables: These are full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Think of colourful fruits like apples, bananas, oranges, and vegetables like spinach, carrots, tomatoes, and pumpkins (a big favourite in many South African dishes!). They help your body fight off sickness and keep your skin healthy.
Grains: These include bread, rice, pap (a South African staple made from maize meal), and pasta. They give you energy to run, play, and learn. Choose whole grains like brown rice or whole-wheat bread whenever possible.
Protein Foods: These are things like meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, and nuts. They help you build and repair your muscles. Remember that protein is important for growing bodies!
Dairy: This group includes milk, yogurt, and cheese. They are important for strong bones and teeth because they contain calcium. Oils, Fats, and Sweets: We also need some fats and oils but not too much. They provide energy, but too much can be unhealthy. Sweets, like candy and fizzy drinks, should only be eaten occasionally.
Balanced Diet: A balanced diet means eating the right amount of food from each food group. This helps you grow properly, stay healthy, and have enough energy. A good way to think about it is to imagine your plate divided into sections: half for fruits and vegetables, one-quarter for grains, and one-quarter for protein. Healthy vs.
Unhealthy Food Choices: Healthy foods are those that give your body lots of nutrients. Unhealthy foods are often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.
Examples: Healthy: A fruit salad with different fruits is healthy. A piece of grilled chicken with vegetables is healthy. A glass of milk is healthy.
Unhealthy: A sugary fizzy drink is unhealthy. A packet of chips loaded with salt is unhealthy. A large, greasy takeaway hamburger is unhealthy. Eating too much of anything, even if it’s usually healthy, can become unhealthy. Why is healthy eating important?

Example 2: Understanding Food Labels Sometimes, food labels can be confusing. They tell us what is in our food. Look for things like sugar, salt, and fat content.
