This week, we delve into the foundation of economics: understanding our needs, wants, and the goods and services that satisfy them. This is crucial for understanding how South Africa's economy works and how we, as individuals and members of our communities, participate in it. Learning about needs, wants, goods and services helps us make informed decisions about our spending, saving, and how businesses operate in our country. It also helps us understand the role of government in providing essential services. By grasping these concepts, you'll be better equipped to understand economic news, make wise financial choices, and contribute positively to our society.

Lesson notes

Needs: Needs are basic things that are essential for survival. These are the things we must have to live a healthy and decent life. If needs aren't met, our well-being is severely affected.

Examples of needs include: Food: Providing energy and nutrients to survive. Think about pap (maize porridge), which is a staple food in many South African homes.

Water: For drinking, sanitation, and hygiene. Access to clean water is a critical need, especially in rural areas.

Shelter: Protection from the elements (rain, sun, cold). This could be a brick house, a shack providing basic cover, or even temporary emergency accommodation.

Clothing: Protecting us from the elements and allowing us to participate in society. Uniforms for school are a need for children to attend class.

Healthcare: Access to medical care to stay healthy. This includes clinics and hospitals providing essential treatments and vaccinations.

Wants: Wants are things that we would like to have, but are not essential for survival. They improve our comfort and quality of life but we can live without them.

Examples of wants include: Designer clothes: These are fashionable but not necessary for basic protection. A large, expensive television: Provides entertainment, but we can live without it.

Eating at a fancy restaurant: Enjoyable but not vital for nourishment.

A luxury car: A comfortable way to travel, but a basic car or public transport can meet the need for transport.

The latest smartphone: Provides communication, but an older model or a basic phone can fulfill that need.

Goods: Goods are tangible items that can be touched and seen. They are physical objects that satisfy our needs and wants.

Examples of goods include: A loaf of bread: Satisfies the need for food.

A school textbook: Supports the need for education.

A pair of shoes: Satisfies the need for clothing.

A bicycle: Satisfies the want for transport and recreation. Furniture (bed, table, chairs): Satisfies the need for shelter and comfort.

Services: Services are activities performed by someone that satisfy our needs and wants. They are intangible, meaning you can't physically touch them.

Examples of services include: A doctor's appointment: Provides healthcare.

A teacher's lesson: Provides education.

A bus ride: Provides transportation.

Hairdressing: Provides grooming and personal care.

Plumbing services: Repairs water systems, satisfying the need for clean water. Public vs.

Private Goods and Services: Public Goods and Services: Provided by the government for the benefit of all citizens. They are usually funded through taxes.

Examples in South Africa include: Public schools and universities Public hospitals and clinics Roads and infrastructure Police and fire services National Defence Private Goods and Services: Provided by private businesses and individuals, typically for profit.

Examples in South Africa include: Private schools Private hospitals Restaurants Hair salons Retail stores selling clothing, electronics, etc.

Scenario: Thando is feeling hungry after school. He has R

0. Question: Identify Thando's needs and wants in this scenario.

Solution:

Need: Food (he is hungry). The vetkoek could satisfy this need.

Want: A cool drink and a soccer ball. He wants them, but he can survive without them.

Scenario: Maria's family lives in a small rural village. They collect water from a nearby river and grow their own vegetables. Maria walks 5km to school each day.

Question: Identify the goods and services Maria's family uses to meet their needs.

Solution:

Goods: Vegetables (food), tools for farming, clothing, school uniform.

Services: Education provided by the school (even though it might be a public service and "free", the teacher provides a service). The river provides a water source, although unimproved, it provides a basic service of providing water.
