0. Counting is a foundational skill in Mathematics, but it is also a vital part of our everyday lives in South Africa. We count when we play games like hide-and-seek (ukufihla) with our friends, when we help Mama count the potatoes for supper, or when we share sweets from the spaza shop. Learning to count forwards helps us understand 'more', while counting backwards helps us understand 'less'. This builds the first steps for adding and subtracting.
This section explains the core ideas learners will grasp. It is crucial to use concrete objects (counters, bottle tops, stones, fingers) for all activities.
Concept 1: Counting Forwards (Getting More) Counting forwards means saying the numbers in the correct order, starting from a smaller number and going to a bigger number. Each number is one more than the number before it. Think of it like walking up a staircase, one step at a time: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
