This introductory week is designed to gently re-introduce Grade R learners to the foundational concepts of mathematics. It serves as a revision and consolidation period, ensuring that all learners have a shared baseline of understanding before new concepts are introduced. The focus is on making mathematics fun, tangible, and relevant to their daily lives. In South Africa, mathematics is not just a school subject; it's a life skill used every day. We see it when we share snacks with friends, when we help Gogo sort the washing, when we count the taxis on the road, or when we build things with blocks.
Concept 1: Numbers and Counting Numbers help us understand 'how many'. In Grade R, we focus on two types of counting at the start.
Rote Counting: This is like learning a song or a rhyme. It's saying the number names in the correct order without necessarily counting objects. We practice this so the number sequence becomes automatic. For example, when we sing, "One, two, three, four, five, once I caught a fish alive..." One-to-One Correspondence: This is the most important counting skill. It means matching one number word to exactly one object. You say one number for each thing you touch. It's how we find out the actual number of items in a group.
