Lesson summary

This week is dedicated to revising and consolidating the key Life Skills concepts covered throughout the term. Revision is like looking back at a photo album of our learning journey; it helps us remember all the important things we have discovered and strengthens our understanding. For Grade R learners in South Africa, these foundational skills are crucial for their personal development, safety, and well-being within their homes, schools, and communities. We will revisit topics such as our bodies and senses, healthy habits, staying safe, and understanding our feelings.

Lesson notes

This section revisits the core concepts taught during the term. The focus is on active recall and practical application through discussion, games, and activities. A. My Body and My Amazing Senses Our bodies are incredible! They help us to learn, play, and explore the world. We explore the world using our five special senses.

Sight (Seeing): We use our eyes to see. We can see colours, like the green of the grass after the rain or the bright colours of a gogo's shweshwe dress. We can see shapes, sizes, and how near or far things are.

Hearing (Listening): We use our ears to hear. We can hear the loud sound of a taxi hooting, the beautiful sound of birds singing in the morning, or the teacher's voice telling a story.

Smell: We use our nose to smell. Our nose can tell us if food is cooking, like pap on the stove or boerewors on a braai. It can also smell sweet flowers in the garden or the rain on the dusty ground.

Taste: We use our tongue in our mouth to taste. We can taste sweet things like mangoes, sour things like lemons, and salty things like chips.

Touch: We use our skin, especially on our hands, to touch and feel. We can feel if something is soft like a blanket, hard like a stone, hot like a cup of tea (be careful!), or cold like the floor in the morning.

Example: Let's think about eating an orange. You use your eyes to see its round shape and orange colour. You use your hands to feel its bumpy skin. You use your nose to smell its fresh, citrusy scent when you peel it. You use your ears to hear the squishing sound as you peel it. Finally, you use your tongue to taste how sweet and juicy it is! B. Healthy Habits for a Strong Body To keep our amazing bodies working well, we need to have healthy habits.

Healthy Eating: Food gives us energy. Some foods are great for our bodies and we should eat them every day. Other foods are treats that we should only eat sometimes. 'Go' Foods: Give us energy to run and play.

Examples: Pap, bread, rice. 'Grow' Foods: Help us grow big and strong.

Examples: Chicken, beans, milk, eggs. 'Glow' Foods: Keep us from getting sick with vitamins.

Examples: Morogo (spinach), carrots, oranges, bananas. 'Sometimes' Foods: These are treats like sweets, chips, and fizzy drinks. They are nice, but too many can make our bodies feel tired and unhealthy.

Keeping Clean (Hygiene): Being clean helps to stop germs from making us sick.

Handwashing: We must wash our hands with soap and water before we eat, after we use the toilet, and after playing outside.

Brushing Teeth: We brush our teeth in the morning and before bed to keep them strong and prevent holes. C. Staying Safe Being safe means protecting our bodies from getting hurt. We need to know the rules to stay safe at home, at school, and on the road.

Road Safety: Always hold a grown-up's hand when you are near a road. Before you cross the road at a safe place (like a zebra crossing), you must stop, look right, look left, and look right again. Only cross when the road is clear. Never run across the road.

Home Safety: Never play with matches, lighters, or fire. Do not touch hot things like the stove, oven, or kettle. Do not play with cleaning chemicals or medicines. Never open the door for a stranger. D. Understanding Our Feelings (Emotions) Feelings are what we feel on the inside. All feelings are okay, but it's important to know what they are and to talk about them.

Happy: You feel happy when something good happens, like when you get a hug from your mom or play with your friends. You smile when you are happy.

Sad: You might feel sad if you fall down and hurt your knee, or if you miss someone. You might cry when you are sad.

Angry: You can feel angry if someone takes your toy without asking. Your face might feel hot, and you might want to shout.

Scared: You might feel scared during a thunderstorm or when you see a big spider. Your eyes might get wide, and your heart might beat fast. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: Sensory Detective Teacher says: "I am thinking of something you do with your ears. Is it tasting an apple or listening to music?" Solution 1: The correct answer is listening to music. We use our ears for the sense of hearing. Tasting an apple uses our sense of taste with our tongue.

Question 2: Healthy Lunchbox Challenge Draw a circle around the foods that are good choices for a healthy school lunchbox.

Show pictures of the following: a packet of chips, a banana, a chocolate bar, a cheese sandwich, a carrot.

Solution 2: The learner should circle the banana, the cheese sandwich, and the carrot.

Commentary: These are healthy choices. The banana and carrot are 'glow' foods with vitamins. The cheese sandwich has bread ('go' food for energy) and cheese ('grow' food for strong bones).

Question 3: Safe or Unsafe? Show a picture of a child running across a busy road to chase a ball.

Ask the learners: "Is this child being safe or unsafe? What should they do instead?" Solution 3: This child is being unsafe.
