This week, we will be revisiting and reinforcing the Life Skills concepts we explored in Week
9. This revision is important because understanding our bodies, healthy habits, and staying safe are crucial for our well-being and allow us to thrive in our communities. In South Africa, where access to healthcare and safe environments can vary, it's even more important for young learners to understand these basic principles to protect themselves and make healthy choices. These skills build a foundation for healthy living, responsible citizenship and future learning.
This week's revision focuses on three main themes: Our bodies, Healthy Habits and Staying Safe.
Our Bodies: Understanding our bodies is the first step to taking care of ourselves. We need to know the names of different parts of our body so we can tell someone if something hurts or feels wrong.
Head: The top of our body, where our brain, eyes, nose, and mouth are located.
Shoulders: The part of our body that connects our arms to our upper body.
Arms: We use our arms to reach, hug, and carry things.
Hands: At the end of our arms, with fingers for grasping and feeling.
Legs: We use our legs to walk, run, and jump.
Feet: At the end of our legs, to help us stand and move.
Stomach: Where our food goes after we eat.
Example: Let's play a game! I'll say a body part, and you point to it. Head! Shoulders! Legs! This helps us remember what each part is called.
Healthy Habits: Healthy habits keep us strong and protect us from getting sick.
Washing Hands: Washing our hands with soap and water removes germs that can make us ill. We should wash our hands before eating, after using the toilet, and after playing outside.
Why: Germs spread easily, especially when we touch our faces.
How: Wet your hands, put on soap, rub them together for at least 20 seconds (sing "Happy Birthday" twice!), and rinse well. Dry with a clean towel.
Brushing Teeth: Brushing our teeth twice a day helps keep our teeth clean and strong. It removes food and plaque that can cause cavities.
Why: Cavities can hurt and make it difficult to eat.
How: Use a toothbrush and toothpaste. Brush all surfaces of your teeth, and don't forget your tongue!
Eating Healthy Foods: Eating fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods gives our bodies the energy and nutrients they need to grow and stay healthy.
Why: Healthy foods provide vitamins and minerals that help us fight off illness.
Examples: Fruits like apples, bananas, and oranges; vegetables like carrots, spinach, and tomatoes; protein from chicken, beans, and fish.
Drinking Water: Water helps our bodies function properly.
Why: Water helps us stay hydrated and prevents headaches.
How: Drink water throughout the day, especially when you are thirsty or after playing.
Example: Thando always washes her hands before eating her pap and vleis. Zola brushes her teeth every morning and night. These are great healthy habits!
Staying Safe: Staying safe means protecting ourselves from danger. "Don't talk to strangers": We should never talk to strangers or accept gifts from them without our parents' permission. Strangers might not be safe.
Why: Strangers might try to trick or hurt us.
How: If a stranger approaches you, walk away and tell a trusted adult (parent, teacher, relative).
Road Safety: Always look left, then right, then left again before crossing the road. Hold an adult's hand when crossing.
Why: Cars can be dangerous.
How: Find a safe place to cross, like a zebra crossing.
Knowing Your Address and Phone Number: It is important to know your address and phone number in case of an emergency.
Why: If you get lost, you can tell someone where you live.
How: Practice saying your address and phone number with your parents.
Example: Sipho was walking home from school when a stranger offered him a sweet. Sipho remembered the rule "don't talk to strangers" and ran home to tell his mom. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
