Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Quick revision game: learners clap hands while spelling sight words.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes
Lesson Focus:

  • Reading Fluency
  • Sentence Writing (Grammar Application)
  • Spelling (Sight Words Revision)
  • Listening Comprehension
  • Handwriting (Letter z and alphabet review)

📖 1. Reading Fluency

Objective:

To improve learners’ oral reading fluency by reading short passages with blend words and high-frequency words.

Definition:

Reading fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression.

Sample Passage:

“The cat is on the mat. She is with the dog. They play in the yard.”

Focus Features:

  • Blends: cat, play, mat
  • Sight words: the, she, is, with, in, they

Teaching Strategy:

  • Model reading fluently.
  • Echo reading: learners repeat after teacher.
  • Choral reading: read together as a class.
  • Group/pair reading.

Why It Matters:

Fluency bridges word recognition and comprehension. Fluent readers spend less energy decoding and more on understanding.

✍️ 2. Writing Practice (Grammar in Sentences)

Objective:

To guide learners in writing complete sentences that include:

  • A noun
  • A verb
  • A preposition
  • Proper punctuation and capitalization

Sentence Model:

“The boy is in the room.”

Grammar Elements in the Sentence:

  • Noun: boy, room
  • Verb: is
  • Preposition: in
  • Punctuation: period (.)
  • Capitalization: “The” begins with a capital letter

Teaching Strategy:

  • Teacher models writing 1–2 sentences on the board.
  • Learners help identify parts of speech.
  • Learners write their own similar sentences using a sentence frame:
    • The ___ is on the ___.
    • She is in the ___.
    • They are with the ___.

✏️ Optional scaffold: Use a sentence building chart with word cards for nouns, verbs, prepositions.

✒️ 3. Spelling Practice – Sight Words Revision

Objective:

To reinforce correct spelling and usage of high-frequency (sight) words introduced in earlier lessons.

Target Sight Words:

  • you, she, he, we, is, are, was, with

Teaching Strategy:

  • Word wall review
  • Spelling chant for each word
  • Dictation: teacher says the word, learners write it
  • Team spelling: divide class into small groups and hold a friendly spelling bee

Activity Example:

  • Teacher: Spell “with”
  • Learners: W-I-T-H

🧠 Encourage sentence creation using each word after spelling for deeper understanding.

👂 4. Listening Comprehension

Objective:

To assess learners’ understanding of a spoken text by answering key wh-questions: Who? Where? What happened?

Sample Listening Passage (Teacher Reads Aloud):

“The girl and the boy are in the room. They see a dog. The dog is on the mat. The children laugh.”

Comprehension Questions:

  1. Who is in the room? → The girl and the boy
  2. Where are they? → In the room
  3. What happened? → They saw a dog and laughed.

Teaching Strategy:

  • Read the passage twice: once for listening, once for meaning.
  • Ask questions orally first. Then have learners write answers (depending on level).
  • Scaffold with sentence starters if needed:
    • “They are in the ___.”
    • “They saw a ___.”

🔍 This builds early comprehension skills: recall, detail extraction, and listening attention.

🔡 5. Handwriting Practice

Objective:

To correctly form lowercase z and revise all lowercase letters a–z.

Focus Letter: z

Step

Description

1

Start at midline, draw a straight line to the right

2

Slant down to the left

3

Draw a straight line to the right again at the base line

📌 Emphasize line use, starting point, and spacing.

Teaching Method:

  • Skywriting: trace letter z in the air
  • Finger tracing on desk or in sand
  • Guided writing on three-line paper
  • Quick review of letters a–y in order

🧠 Tip: Use “alphabet rainbow” activity—each learner writes the alphabet using a different crayon color.

👧 Learners’ Activities (Expanded)

Activity

Description

Alphabet Handwriting

Trace and copy lowercase letters z and revise a–z

✅ Assessment Checks (Formative)

Skill

Assessment Task

Reading Fluency

Observe learners reading aloud for accuracy and pace using a rubric

Sentence Writing

Check if learners' sentences have correct structure (noun, verb, preposition, punctuation)

Spelling Sight Words

Dictation or oral spelling of target words

Comprehension

Learners answer who, where, and what questions correctly from a short passage

Handwriting

Check letter formation of z and consistency in forming a–z

📝 Instructional Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Reading Fluency is built through repeated reading. Encourage expression and pacing, not just speed.
  • Writing Practice helps learners apply grammar and vocabulary in meaningful ways. Sentence writing reinforces parts of speech.
  • Spelling Revision strengthens word recognition and writing accuracy. Use multi-sensory techniques (say, spell, write, use).
  • Listening Comprehension encourages attentive listening and builds narrative understanding—a key to later reading comprehension.
  • Handwriting Practice of all lowercase letters helps reinforce correct formation, spacing, and fine motor skills.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher revises nouns, verbs, prepositions, sentence types, punctuation, handwriting, and sight words.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Write one complete sentence with a noun, verb, preposition, and correct punctuation.

Assignment (Expanded):
Revise all sight words from Weeks 7–11.

Follow-up Activity:
Learners practice reading short stories at home with parents.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Weaker learners get extra oral reading practice. Advanced learners write a three-sentence story.
