B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body

Time: 25–30 minutes

  • High-Frequency Words: on, is

✍️ 1. Sentence Structure

✅ Definition:

A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete idea. Every sentence has:

  • A subject – who or what the sentence is about
  • A predicate – what is being said about the subject (includes a verb)

📘 Examples:

  • The boy runs. → Subject: The boy | Predicate: runs
  • My dog barks at night. → Subject: My dog | Predicate: barks at night

🧠 Teaching Strategy:

  • Use visuals (e.g., sentence strip cards) to help learners build simple subject-predicate sentences.
  • Ask questions like: Who is the sentence about? What is happening?

🔠 2. Capitalization Rules

✅ Definition:

  • Always capitalize:
    • The first word in a sentence
    • The pronoun “I”
    • Proper nouns – specific names of people, places, days, months

📘 Examples:

  • i am going to school. → ❌
  • I am going to school. → ✅
  • we live in monrovia. → ❌
  • We live in Monrovia. → ✅

🧠 Practice editing incorrect sentences on the board with the class.

🎨 3. Adjectives – Describing Words

✅ Definition:

An adjective is a word that describes a noun (person, place, or thing). It gives more information.

📘 Examples:

  • The tall boy ran. (tall describes the boy)
  • The red car is fast. (red describes the car)

🧠 Teaching Strategy:

  • Use picture cards or objects and ask: What kind of...?

E.g., What kind of apple?A green apple

📝 4. Articles – a / an

✅ Definition:

Articles come before singular nouns and help us talk about things.

  • Use “a” before words that begin with consonant sounds
  • Use “an” before words that begin with vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u)

📘 Examples:

  • a book, a cat, a toy
  • an egg, an umbrella, an ant

🧠 Emphasize sound, not just the letter. For example: an hour (because of the /ow/ sound).

📗 5. High-Frequency Words: on, is

✅ Definitions:

  • on – shows position

The bag is on the table.

  • is – form of the verb to be, used with singular subjects

She is happy.

🧠 Activity Idea:

  • Ask learners to find the words on and is in sentences or short texts.
  • Build short oral and written sentences with these words.

✍️ 6. Cursive Handwriting Practice
