  • Main Idea:
    The main idea is what the story or paragraph is mostly about — the central point the author wants you to know.
  • Supporting Details:
    These are facts, examples, or descriptions that explain or give more information about the main idea.
  • Story Elements:
    Key parts of a story that include:
    • Characters (who is in the story)
    • Setting (where it happens)
    • Events (what happens)

  • Story:
    “Tom has a pet cat. The cat likes milk. The cat sleeps on Tom’s bed.”
  • Main Idea:
    Tom has a pet cat.
  • Supporting Details:
    The cat likes milk.
    The cat sleeps on Tom’s bed.
