Use colors in art activities to reinforce vocabulary
Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
Basic colors and shapes vocabulary in French
Instructional Materials
Textbook: French for Beginners, Grade 1
Flashcards with colored shapes
Art materials (crayons, papers, paints)
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
Can you name a color and a shape in French?
Learner’s Role:
Respond orally and attempt to combine color and shape words
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
• Begin by revising previously learned shape and color vocabulary with flashcards or real objects: cercle, carré, triangle, rectangle, rouge, jaune, bleu, vert, noir.
• Clearly model combining color and shape words into descriptive French phrases, such as:
– un cercle rouge (a red circle)
– un carré jaune (a yellow square)
– un triangle vert (a green triangle)
– un rectangle bleu (a blue rectangle)
• Use visual aids and real classroom objects (e.g., red bottle cap = cercle rouge) to demonstrate combinations.
• Write the phrases on the board and say each sentence slowly. Have learners repeat them several times.
• Break down sentence structure: un + shape + color
• Guide learners in forming their own simple descriptive sentences using classroom visuals or drawings.
• Conduct a guided art session where learners draw shapes and color them according to given instructions. Example: “Dessinez un cercle vert” (Draw a green circle).
• Walk around the room correcting pronunciation and spelling during sentence practice and the art activity.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
• Repeat combined descriptive phrases after the teacher: “un cercle rouge,” “un triangle noir,” etc.
• Create their own colored shapes using crayons, pencils, or markers, following teacher’s instructions.
• Label each shape correctly with the French descriptive phrase. Example: draw a yellow square and label it un carré jaune.
• Form and say short sentences aloud, such as:
– “Voici un cercle vert.”
– “C’est un triangle bleu.”
– “J’ai un carré rouge.”
• Practice pronunciation in small groups and pairs.
• Participate in spelling exercises: writing combined phrases under drawn shapes.

Assessment Checks
• Observe and listen as learners describe their colored shapes orally and check for correct combination of color and shape vocabulary.
• Ask individual learners to draw and describe a shape on the board. For example:
– Teacher: “Dessine un triangle.”
– Learner draws and says: “C’est un triangle rouge.”
• Review learners’ artwork and written labels to ensure spelling and sentence structure are correct.
• Give a mini oral quiz: Teacher says “un cercle jaune” and learners hold up matching drawings.

Peer Review
• Learners work in pairs to share and describe their drawings. One describes a shape, the other guesses or corrects if needed.
• Pairs check each other’s spelling of sentences written under shapes.
• Encourage polite corrections using classroom phrases like:
– “Je crois que c’est bleu, pas vert.”
– “Très bien! Ton cercle est rouge.”

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
• Use repetition, call-and-response drills, and hands-on art to reinforce vocabulary.
• Incorporate movement by having students point to colored shapes displayed around the classroom.
• Allow time for creative expression so learners feel ownership of their work while practicing French.
• Connect the lesson to real life: ask students to look for colored shapes at home or in the community.
• Use group chants to reinforce structure: “Un cercle rouge! Un cercle rouge!”

Assignment (Homework)
• Learners will:

  1. Draw three different shapes and color them (e.g., triangle, carré, cercle).
  2. Write the French names under each drawing using the correct structure:
    un carré bleu
    un triangle jaune
    un cercle vert
  3. Practice saying each phrase aloud at home, and teach one to a family member for fun interaction.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
Exit slip/quiz: Describe one colored shape in French
Follow-up Activity: Oral sharing of colored shapes with classmates
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide templates and color guides for slow learners
Challenge advanced learners to describe multiple colored shapes in one sentence
