  • Associate ordinal numbers with days of the week.
  • Match days to their order using simple activities.

Previous Knowledge

  • Names of all seven days of the week.
  • Basic recitation and spelling.

Instructional Materials

  • Ordinal number flashcards
  • Seven-day chart
  • Whiteboard and markers

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:

  • Review all seven days of the week in sequence.
  • Ask: “Which day is first? Which day is second?”

Learner’s Role:

  • Answer questions using previous knowledge.
  • Listen and participate.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)

  1. Introduction of Ordinal Numbers
    • Begin by explaining to learners that ordinal numbers tell us the position or order of something. For example, “first,” “second,” “third,” etc.
    • Introduce French ordinal numbers clearly and slowly:
      • premier (1st)
      • deuxième (2nd)
      • troisième (3rd)
      • quatrième (4th)
      • cinquième (5th)
      • sixième (6th)
      • septième (7th)
    • Write each ordinal number on the board alongside its English meaning.
  2. Modeling Association with Days of the Week
    • Explain how each day corresponds to an ordinal number:
      • Lundi est le premier jour. (Monday is the first day.)
      • Mardi est le deuxième jour. (Tuesday is the second day.)
      • Mercredi est le troisième jour. (Wednesday is the third day.)
    • Continue similarly for all seven days, writing the sentence pattern on the board.
  3. Demonstrate Matching Game
    • Prepare cards with the names of the days and separate cards with ordinal numbers written on them.
    • Show learners how to match the day cards with the correct ordinal number cards. For example, match Lundi card with premier card.
    • Model the activity, talking through your thought process aloud: “Lundi is first, so I put Lundi with premier.”
  4. Oral Repetition Practice
    • Lead learners in repeating sentences such as:
      • “Le premier jour est lundi.”
      • “Le deuxième jour est mardi.”
      • “Le troisième jour est mercredi.”
    • Use call-and-response to engage learners, repeating several times for fluency.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)

  1. Repeat Ordinal Numbers Aloud
    • Learners say the ordinal numbers aloud together, then individually, focusing on pronunciation and rhythm.
  2. Match Day Cards with Ordinal Numbers
    • In small groups or pairs, learners work with sets of cards to match each day of the week to the correct ordinal number.
    • Discuss matches with partners, explaining why each day fits its position.
  3. Recite Days with Ordinal Numbers
    • Individually and in pairs, learners practice reciting sentences linking days with their ordinal positions, e.g., “Le quatrième jour est jeudi.”
    • Encourage confident, clear speaking.
  4. Participate in Class Games
    • Play interactive games like “Which day is troisième?” where the teacher says an ordinal number and learners answer with the correct day.
    • Reverse roles by calling out days and asking learners for the ordinal number.

Assessment Checks

  1. Identification of Days by Ordinal Number
    • Ask individual learners: “Quel est le premier jour?” or “Quel est le cinquième jour?”
    • Listen for correct oral responses.
  2. Observe Matching Activity
    • Monitor groups during the matching card game, ensuring learners place days with the correct ordinal numbers.
    • Provide help and corrections as needed.

Peer Review

  • Learners work in pairs to check each other’s matching of days and ordinal numbers.
  • Partners politely correct pronunciation and confirm correct matches.
  • Encourage positive reinforcement and teamwork.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Reinforce learning of ordinal numbers through frequent oral repetition and engaging games.
  • Use visual aids such as cards and the board to support learners who find memorization challenging.
  • Keep sentences simple and repetitive to build familiarity and confidence.

Assignment (Homework)

  • Write the seven days of the week with their corresponding ordinal numbers in French. For example:
  1. Lundi – premier
  2. Mardi – deuxième
  3. Mercredi – troisième
    … and so on.
  • Practice saying the sentences aloud at home, e.g., “Le premier jour est lundi.”

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes

Evaluation Method:

  • Exit slip: Name the day corresponding to a given ordinal number.
  • Follow-up Activity: Recite all seven days with ordinal numbers in order.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:

  • Visual support and repetition for slow learners.
  • Challenge advanced learners to recite without prompts.
