Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:

  • Recap Janvier → Avril using flashcards.
  • Ask: “Can anyone guess what comes after Avril?”

Learner’s Role:

  • Participate in recap.
  • Attempt to guess new months.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)

  1. Introduce the Months Mai, Juin, Juillet, Août with Pronunciation
    • Write the month names on the board: Mai, Juin, Juillet, Août.
    • Pronounce each month clearly and slowly:
“Mai” (my), “Juin” (zhwan), “Juillet” (zhwee-yay), “Août” (oot).
    • Repeat each month several times, focusing on clear vowel and consonant sounds, especially the nasal sounds in Juin and Juillet.
    • Use mouth gestures to show how the sounds are made (e.g., rounding lips for “Ou” in Août).
  2. Practice Oral Repetition
    • Use call-and-response repetition: Teacher says “Mai,” learners repeat in chorus and then individually.
    • Group the months in pairs for easier practice: “Mai, Juin,” “Juillet, Août.”
    • Repeat the pronunciation cycle 3–4 times to build confidence.
  3. Sequence All Eight Months Learned So Far on the Board
    • Write or display all eight months learned so far in mixed order:
Janvier, Février, Mars, Avril, Mai, Juin, Juillet, Août.
    • Invite learners to come up to the board to rearrange the months into the correct sequence.
    • Recite the months together in order once arranged correctly.
  4. Use Matching Activities Linking Months to Pictures and Seasons
    • Show pictures related to these months such as flowers for Mai, sunshine and school holidays for Juin and Juillet, and summer activities for Août.
    • Explain briefly which season each month belongs to:
“Mai, Juin, Juillet et Août sont au printemps et en été” (spring and summer).
    • Lead learners in matching the month cards with the correct pictures or seasonal symbols.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)

  1. Repeat Months Aloud Individually and in Chorus
    • Learners practice saying each month aloud after the teacher.
    • Repeat both individually and as a group to build pronunciation skills and confidence.
  2. Sequence Eight Months in Order
    • Using flashcards or the board, learners practice putting all eight months in the correct order.
    • Work individually, in pairs, or small groups to reinforce sequencing skills.
  3. Match Months to Pictures of Holidays or Seasons
    • Engage learners in a hands-on matching game where they pair month names with relevant pictures (flowers, sun, school holidays).
    • Discuss the matches as a class, reinforcing vocabulary and associations.

Assessment Checks

  1. Observe Correct Pronunciation and Sequencing
    • Listen carefully as learners pronounce each month.
    • Observe learners during sequencing activities to ensure they understand the order.
  2. Check Participation in Matching Activity
    • Ensure all learners actively participate in matching months to pictures and seasons.
    • Provide support to learners who struggle.

Peer Review

  • Learners work in pairs to say the months aloud and check each other’s pronunciation.
  • Encourage them to give positive feedback and gently correct any errors.
  • Promote collaborative learning by having pairs quiz each other on the sequence of the months.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Use repetition frequently to help learners remember the months and their pronunciation.
  • Visual aids such as pictures, flashcards, and gestures enhance understanding and memory.
  • Games and interactive activities maintain learner interest and make learning fun.
  • Pay special attention to tricky sounds (nasals, vowel combinations) and model them clearly.

Assignment (Homework)

  • Learners write the first eight months of the year in French in order in their notebooks.
  • Encourage learners to practice saying all eight months aloud at home, ideally with a family member or friend.
  • Optionally, learners can draw a simple calendar highlighting these months or draw pictures representing each month’s season or special holidays.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes

Evaluation Method:

  • Exit slip: Recite any two of the eight months aloud.
  • Follow-up Activity: Chant all eight months together.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:

  • Use gestures and visual cues for slower learners.
  • Challenge advanced learners to recite months from memory.
