Subject: General Science
Grade Level: Grade 1
Date: Week 34
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 34, Period 6
Topic: HIV and AIDS
Sub-topic: Understanding the Basics
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  • Explain what HIV and AIDS are in simple terms
  • Identify ways HIV can be transmitted and ways it cannot
  • Recognize the dangers of wrong beliefs about HIV

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
Basic hygiene practices
Awareness of personal safety and body care

Instructional Materials
Pictures illustrating safe and unsafe behaviors related to HIV
Chart paper and markers

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter) Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks: Have you heard about HIV or AIDS? What do you know about it? Students share ideas
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Teacher introduces the word “HIV” (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and explains in very simple terms: “HIV is a tiny germ that makes the body weak and sick if not cared for.”
  • Pupils look at pictures/flashcards showing:
    • A doctor caring for a patient.
    • People hugging or sharing food.
    • A person using a clean syringe.
    • A sick person being helped.
  • Teacher explains the meaning of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) as what happens when HIV makes the body very weak.
  • Pupils discuss how HIV spreads:
    • Through sharing sharp objects like blades or needles.
    • From mother to baby during birth or breastfeeding if the mother has HIV.
    • Through unprotected blood transfusion.
  • Pupils discuss how HIV does not spread:
    • Not by hugging, shaking hands, or playing.
    • Not by sharing food or water.
    • Not by sitting next to someone in class.
  • Teacher guides a role-play:
    • Group 1 acts out a safe way (hugging, playing, sharing a seat).
    • Group 2 acts out an unsafe way (sharing blades, unsafe injections).
  • Pupils chant together: “We can care, not fear!”

Assessment Checks:

  • Oral questions:
    • “Name one way HIV spreads.”
    • “Name one way HIV does NOT spread.”
    • “Should we fear people with HIV?”
  • Observation of role-play: Do students show safe and unsafe actions correctly?
  • Peer group discussion: Pupils explain in their own words why hugging and playing are safe.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • HIV is a virus (a tiny germ) that can enter the body and make the body weak over time.
  • If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS, which makes it hard for the body to fight sickness.
  • HIV spreads through:
    • Sharing sharp objects (blades, needles).
    • Unsafe blood transfusion.
    • From mother to baby during birth or breastfeeding.
  • HIV does not spread through:
    • Hugging, shaking hands, sitting together, or sharing food.
    • Playing together in school or at home.
  • Wrong beliefs about HIV (like thinking you can get it from hugs or sharing food) cause fear, stigma, and harm.
  • We should care for people living with HIV by showing love, respect, and kindness.

Extra Practical Examples & Activities:

  • Class drawing: Pupils draw one safe way (hugging, sharing food) and one unsafe way (sharing sharp objects).
  • Storytelling: Teacher tells a short story of a child living with HIV who still plays, learns, and smiles like other children.
  • Song/Chant: “HIV does not spread by play, we can be friends every day!”
  • Home assignment: Pupils ask their parents/guardians about one safe way to stay healthy and report back.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment) Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Recap basic facts about HIV, correct and incorrect ways of transmission, and dangers of myths

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Students name one fact about HIV and one myth to avoid
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback

Assignment (Expanded): Draw a picture showing one safe behavior to prevent HIV

Follow-up Activity: Discuss with parents ways to keep safe from HIV

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Use visual aids and simple language for learners who need support
Pair students to discuss safe behaviors and correct myths
