Week 23
School Name:
Teacher’s Name:
Subject: General Science
Grade Level: Grade 1
Date: Week 23
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 23, Period 4
Topic: Importance of Earth’s Components
Sub-topic: Connections Among Soil, Rock, Air, and Water
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  • Explain the importance of soil, rock, air, and water for life.
  • Describe what would happen if one Earth component was missing.
  • Demonstrate understanding through role-play or storytelling.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:

  • Earth’s components: soil, rock, air, water.
  • Uses of water and characteristics of soil and rocks.

Instructional Materials

  • Pictures showing soil, rocks, water, and air
  • Chart paper and markers
  • Props for role-play (optional)

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter) Time: 5–10 minutes

  • Teacher asks: “What do we need to live?”
  • Students brainstorm why air, water, soil, and rocks are important.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Teacher begins with a short discussion: “The Earth has four important parts—air, water, soil, and rocks. All are needed for life.”
  • Students give examples of how they use each: drinking water, breathing air, planting in soil, building houses with rocks.
  • In groups, students predict what would happen if one component was missing:
    • No water: people, plants, and animals cannot survive.
    • No air: humans and animals cannot breathe.
    • No soil: plants cannot grow, no food for humans/animals.
    • No rocks: no strong land or houses to live in.
  • Teacher guides a role-play/storytelling activity:
    • Group 1: Act out a world without water (everyone feels thirsty, plants die).
    • Group 2: Act out a world without air (pretend to gasp for breath).
    • Group 3: Act out a world without soil (pretend seeds cannot grow).
    • Group 4: Act out a world without rocks (houses collapse, no shelter).
  • Students then share their feelings about living without one Earth component.

Assessment Checks:

  • Oral questions:
    • “Why is air important for us?”
    • “What would happen if there was no water?”
    • “Can plants grow without soil?”
    • “What do we use rocks for?”
  • Teacher observes each group’s role-play and storytelling participation.
  • Pupils write or draw one thing that would happen if a component was missing.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • All Earth’s components are connected, and each one is important for life:
    • Water: Needed for drinking, cooking, washing, and for plants and animals to survive.
    • Air: Invisible but essential for breathing; without it, no human or animal could live.
    • Soil: Provides nutrients and support for plants; without soil, no crops, no food.
    • Rocks: Form the land we walk on; used for building houses, roads, and protection.
  • If even one component is missing, life on Earth cannot continue.
  • This shows that Earth’s parts work together to support all living things.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment) Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:

  • Recap the importance of all Earth’s components and their connections.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students name one reason each Earth component is important.
• Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):

  • Draw a picture showing soil, rock, air, and water and label their importance.

Follow-up Activity:

  • Observe and note examples of how Earth’s components support life in their surroundings.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Provide props and visual aids for students with learning difficulties.
  • Encourage peer discussion for students needing extra support.
