School Name:
Teacher’s Name:
Subject: General Science
Grade Level: Grade 1
Date: Week 3
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 3, Period 1
Topic: Our Senses
Sub-topic: Sense of Smell, Sense of Taste, and Sense of Touch

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
• Identify the nose as the sense organ for smelling and give examples of things they smell
• Identify the tongue as the sense organ for tasting and give examples of things they taste
• Identify the skin/hands as the sense organ for touching and give examples of what they feel

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• They use their nose to breathe
• They eat food with their tongue
• They use their hands to hold and feel objects

Instructional Materials
• Objects with different smells (soap, perfume, orange peel)
• Food items for tasting (sugar, salt, biscuit) – use safely and in small amounts
• Objects for touch (soft cloth, stone, toy, feather)
• Chart of body parts (nose, tongue, skin/hands)

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
• Teacher holds up an orange peel and asks: “What do you smell?”
• Teacher shows sugar and asks: “What does this taste like?”
• Teacher asks children to rub their hands on a soft cloth and a stone: “How does it feel?”
• Teacher says: “Today we will learn about three senses – smell, taste, and touch.”

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role and Explanation

  • Teacher introduces: “We have already learned about the eyes (sight) and ears (hearing). Today, we will learn about three more senses: smell, taste, and touch.”
  • Teacher touches the nose and says: “The nose helps us to smell.”
  • Teacher touches the tongue and says: “The tongue helps us to taste.”
  • Teacher touches the skin/hands and says: “The skin helps us to feel.”
  • Teacher explains in simple terms:
    • The nose can tell if something smells nice (flowers, food, perfume) or bad (smoke, dirty water, rotten food).
    • The tongue can tell if food is sweet, salty, sour, or bitter.
    • The skin helps us know if something is hot, cold, soft, rough, hard, or smooth.

Illustrations and Demonstrations

  • For Smell (Nose):
    • Teacher brings soap, perfume, orange peel, or onion. Pupils smell each and describe: “The perfume smells nice,” “The onion smells strong.”
  • For Taste (Tongue):
    • Teacher gives tiny portions on clean spoons:
      • Sugar → sweet
      • Salt → salty
      • Lemon juice → sour
      • Bitter leaf or bitter kola (if available) → bitter
  • For Touch (Skin):
    • Teacher provides a mix of objects:
      • Cotton wool or feather → soft
      • Stone → hard
      • Sandpaper or rough cloth → rough
      • Smooth toy → smooth
      • Ice cube (if available) → cold
      • Warm bottle (slightly warm, safe) → warm/hot

Learners’ Activities (Expanded)

  1. Choral Repetition:
    • Pupils touch their nose and say: “Nose helps us to smell.”
    • Pupils touch their tongue and say: “Tongue helps us to taste.”
    • Pupils touch their skin and say: “Skin helps us to feel.”
  2. Smelling Game:
    • Teacher blindfolds a few pupils.
    • Pupils smell soap, orange, or onion and guess what it is.
  3. Tasting Game:
    • Pupils taste small samples of sugar, salt, or lemon.
    • Pupils describe whether it is sweet, salty, or sour.
  4. Touch and Tell:
    • Pupils close their eyes, teacher gives them an object to hold.
    • They describe it: “It is soft,” “It is rough,” “It is smooth.”
  5. Outdoor Activity:
    • Pupils go outside and say what they can smell (flowers, food cooking, smoke).
    • Pupils touch tree bark, leaves, or stones to describe how they feel.

Assessment Checks (Expanded)

Teacher asks pupils orally:

  1. Which part of the body do we use to smell? (Answer: Nose)
  2. Which part of the body do we use to taste? (Answer: Tongue)
  3. Which part of the body do we use to touch and feel? (Answer: Skin/hands)
  4. Give one example of something you can smell. (Perfume, onion, flower, smoke)
  5. Give one example of something you can taste. (Sugar, salt, lemon)
  6. Give one example of something you can feel. (Stone, cloth, feather, ice)

Notes (Expanded & Detailed for Pupils)

  • The nose gives us the sense of smell. We can smell:
    • Perfume
    • Flowers
    • Food cooking
    • Smoke or bad smell from dirt
  • The tongue gives us the sense of taste. We can taste:
    • Sweet things (sugar, sweets, honey)
    • Salty things (salt, salty water, chips)
    • Sour things (lemon, lime)
    • Bitter things (bitter leaf, bitter kola, medicine)
  • The skin (especially the hands) gives us the sense of touch. We can feel:
    • Soft things (cotton wool, pillow)
    • Hard things (stone, desk)
    • Rough things (sandpaper, tree bark)
    • Smooth things (glass, toy)
    • Hot things (fire, hot water)
    • Cold things (ice, cold water)

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Teacher revises: Nose → smell, Tongue → taste, Skin → touch.
• Students clap and repeat the three points aloud.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Each child says one thing they can smell, taste, and touch.
• Teacher listens and gives oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
• At home, ask your parents to name one thing you can smell, one thing you can taste, and one thing you can touch. Bring your answers to class.

Follow-up Activity:
• Teacher will prepare a “senses table” where students can continue to smell, taste, and touch safe items in groups.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Allow students who struggle with speaking to point to the correct body part instead.
• Provide more hands-on practice with objects for learners who need extra help.
• Use group work so every child participates.
