Teacher’s Name:
Subject: General Science
Grade Level: Grade 1
Date: Week 26
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 26, Period 5
Topic: Seasons in Liberia and Another World Climate Region
Sub-topic: Rainy and dry seasons in Liberia; Comparison with another world climate region

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  • Identify the rainy and dry seasons in Liberia
  • Describe seasonal activities such as farming, harvesting, and festivals
  • Compare Liberia’s seasons with another world climate region, such as winter and summer in temperate countries
  • Make simple drawings of seasonal activities

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
Types of weather
Basic knowledge of farming and community activities

Instructional Materials
Pictures showing seasonal activities in Liberia and temperate countries
Chart paper and markers
Crayons or colored pencils for drawings

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter) Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks: What season is it now? What activities do people do during rainy or dry seasons? Students share ideas
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Teacher shows pictures of rainy season activities in Liberia: people farming, planting rice, children wearing raincoats, families carrying umbrellas, traditional festivals.
  • Teacher shows pictures of dry season activities in Liberia: people harvesting crops, drying clothes, children playing outside in the sun, people fetching water from wells.
  • Students describe what they see in each picture using simple sentences. (e.g., “The man is planting rice in the rain.” “The girl is playing in the sun.”)
  • Teacher explains that Liberia has two main seasons:
    • Rainy Season (May–October) → heavy rains, planting crops, using umbrellas, floods in some places.
    • Dry Season (November–April) → little or no rain, harvesting crops, dust, bush fires, more sunshine.
  • Teacher compares with seasons in temperate countries:
    • Summer → hot, people swim, wear light clothes.
    • Winter → very cold, snow falls, people wear jackets and stay indoors.
  • Students discuss in pairs: “What is the difference between Liberia’s dry season and another country’s winter?”
  • Practical activity: Students draw two pictures – one showing rainy season in Liberia, the other showing winter or summer in another country. Teacher guides them to label: “Rainy Season – Liberia”, “Winter – USA”, etc.

Assessment Checks:

  • Teacher asks:
    • “Which season is best for planting crops?” (Rainy season).
    • “Which season is for harvesting?” (Dry season).
    • “How is summer in another country different from Liberia’s rainy season?” (Summer is hot/dry, rainy season has lots of rain).
  • Teacher checks students’ drawings to see if seasonal activities and labels are correct.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Seasons in Liberia:
    • Rainy Season: Heavy rainfall, cloudy skies, planting crops, traditional festivals, children wear raincoats/umbrellas.
    • Dry Season: Little or no rain, harvesting crops, dust in the air, bush fires, children play outdoors more.
  • Seasons in Other Countries (Temperate regions):
    • Summer: Hot, sunny, people swim, wear shorts and T-shirts.
    • Winter: Very cold, snow falls, people wear coats, gloves, boots.
  • Comparison:
    • Liberia has 2 seasons (rainy & dry), temperate regions often have 4 seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter).
    • Rainy season helps crops grow; dry season is for harvest.
    • In winter, crops don’t grow easily; in summer, people enjoy outdoor activities like swimming.
  • Practical Connection: Students should observe what people around them do in rainy and dry seasons and share examples in class.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment) Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Recap the seasons in Liberia and compare with another world region

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Students name one activity in rainy and one in dry season
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback

Assignment (Expanded): Draw a comparison of seasonal activities at home in Liberia and in another country

Follow-up Activity: Observe seasonal changes in the school environment

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Provide labeled pictures for students who need visual guidance
Encourage peer discussion for understanding seasonal comparisons
