Week 21
School Name:
Teacher’s Name:
Subject: General Science
Grade Level: Grade 1
Date: Week 21
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 21, Period 4
Topic: Sources of Water
Sub-topic: Main Natural Sources of Water; Safe vs Unsafe Water; Uses of Water
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  • List natural sources of water: rain, well, river, stream, pond, ocean.
  • Identify safe and unsafe water sources.
  • Explain the uses of water in daily life.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:

  • Water exists in the environment.

Instructional Materials

  • Pictures of rivers, ponds, wells, oceans, rain
  • Water samples (clean and dirty)
  • Chart showing safe vs unsafe water

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter) Time: 5–10 minutes

  • Teacher asks: “Where do we get water from?”
  • Students share ideas from home and school.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Teacher shows pictures and real examples (if possible) of different water sources: rain, river, stream, well, borehole, tap, pond, and ocean.
  • Students observe and describe what they see: “Is the water clear or dirty?”
  • Teacher demonstrates by pouring clean drinking water into a glass and comparing it with muddy or colored water in another container. Students identify which is safe.
  • In small groups, students discuss and list water sources around their homes or school (e.g., tap, borehole, rainwater).
  • Teacher guides learners to brainstorm and share daily uses of water:
    • Drinking
    • Cooking
    • Bathing
    • Washing clothes
    • Watering plants
    • Cleaning the classroom
  • Students draw simple pictures showing how they or their families use water at home.

Assessment Checks:

  • Oral questions:
    • “Which water is safe for drinking?”
    • “Name two uses of water.”
    • “Where do we get water in our school/home?”
  • Group discussion: Each group shares one safe water source and one unsafe source from their environment.
  • Teacher quick check: Students raise their hands if they use water for bathing, washing, or watering plants.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Water is one of the main components of the Earth and is important for all living things.
  • Sources of water include: rain, rivers, wells, streams, oceans, lakes, boreholes, and taps.
  • Safe water (clean water) is clear, without dirt or germs, and comes from treated taps, boreholes, or properly stored rainwater.
  • Unsafe water (dirty water) is from untreated rivers, ponds, or wells; it may contain germs and can cause illness like diarrhea or cholera.
  • Daily uses of water: drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, watering plants, cleaning, and helping animals survive.
  • Students should understand that water must be clean and safe before drinking.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment) Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:

  • Recap sources of water, safety, and uses.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students name 3 sources of water.
• Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback

Assignment (Expanded):

  • Draw 2 safe water sources and 1 unsafe water source at home.

Follow-up Activity:

  • Field visit to a nearby water source to observe cleanliness and use.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Provide picture cards for students with reading difficulties.
  • Pair students to share observations.
