Subject: Mathematics
Grade Level: Grade 1
Date: Week 22
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 22, Period 4
Topic: Addition
Sub-topic: Regrouping Ones (Renaming) in Addition

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Add 2-digit numbers involving regrouping
Use base 10 models to regroup ones into tens
Recall number families up to 11

Previous Knowledge
Students already know addition of 2-digit numbers without regrouping

Instructional Materials
Mathematics textbook, base 10 blocks, place value charts, flashcards of number bonds

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher reviews number bonds to 10 (e.g. 7 + 3 = 10). Students recite aloud.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Regrouping means exchanging ten ones for one ten when the sum of ones is more than 9. Example: 38 + 27
Step 1: Write vertically:
38
+27
Step 2: Add ones: 8 + 7 = 15. Write down 5 and carry over 1 ten.
Step 3: Add tens: 3 + 2 = 5, plus the carried over 1 = 6 tens.
Answer = 65
Number families show related facts. Example: 4 + 6 = 10, 6 + 4 = 10, 10 – 4 = 6.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded)
Students solve regrouping sums with base 10 blocks.
Students write down carried tens in vertical sums.
Students practice number families using flashcards.

Assessment Checks
Teacher asks: “What is 46 + 25?” “What is 29 + 13?”

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Regrouping is essential when ones exceed 9. Always remind students to carry tens. Number families build fluency and help in mental calculations.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: When adding, regroup ones into tens if necessary.

Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Solve 38 + 27 and 47 + 15.

Assignment (Expanded)
Students solve 8 regrouping problems from textbook.

Follow-up Activity
Students create 3 of their own regrouping problems and solve them.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Weaker learners use base 10 blocks. Stronger learners solve without manipulatives.
