Instructional Materials
Mathematics textbook for Grade 1
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher uses counters or beans. Asks: “If I have 3 beans and add 2 more, how many now?”
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Addition:
Use + sign to add numbers
Example: 3 + 2 = 5
Subtraction:
Use – sign to subtract
Example: 5 – 2 = 3
Link to sets:
Set A = {apple, banana, orange} → n(A) = 3
Set B = {carrot, tomato} → n(B) = 2
n(A ∪ B) = 3 + 2 = 5
Word Problems:
I had 4 pencils. I gave away 2. How many are left? → 4 – 2 = 2
There are 5 girls and 3 boys. How many children? → 5 + 3 = 8
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Students solve word problems in pairs
Students match sets to number sentences
Group competition: teams solve number stories
Assessment Checks:
Teacher checks learners’ calculations and how they write + and –
Observe ability to link sets to numbers
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Addition adds more
Subtraction removes
Both can be shown using sets or numbers
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Addition (+) and subtraction (–) help us solve number problems. Sets can help us understand them.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Solve 5 – 2 and 3 + 4
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):
Write 2 word problems at home using + and – and solve them
Follow-up Activity:
Review weak areas in addition and subtraction next lesson
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Use pictures and concrete materials. Allow learners to use fingers or counters. Provide support for word problem comprehension.
