Date: Week 16
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 16, Period 3
Topic: Number Sequences
Sub-topic: Finding Numbers Before, After, Between and Ordinal Numbers
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Identify numbers that come before or after a given number
Find numbers between two given numbers
Understand ordinal numbers up to 100
Previous Knowledge
Students already know how to count numbers up to 100 in order.
Instructional Materials
Mathematics textbook for Grade 1, number line, calendar, race picture cards.
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
The teacher counts aloud from 1 to 20 and intentionally skips a number, asking students to identify which number is missing.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
The teacher explains that:
The number before 45 is 44, the number after 45 is 46.
The number between 12 and 14 is 13.
Ordinal numbers show position or order. For example: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.
Examples:
In a race, the winner is 1st, the next is 2nd, and so on.
In a calendar, Monday can be the 1st day of the week, Tuesday the 2nd, etc.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Students find before, after, and between numbers on number lines.
Students arrange themselves in a line and assign ordinal positions.
Students identify ordinal numbers on a calendar and in classroom activities.
Assessment Checks:
What comes before 36?
What comes after 79?
What is the number between 22 and 24?
Who is 3rd in this picture of a race?
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Numbers before, after, and between help us know sequence. Ordinal numbers tell position in an ordered list, like 1st, 2nd, 3rd up to 100th.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Numbers have positions in sequences. Before, after, and between numbers help us locate them. Ordinal numbers tell the position of items or people.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: What number is before 60? What number is between 48 and 50? Who is in the 2nd position in this race picture?
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):
Write the ordinal positions of 1–10 in words (first, second… tenth).
Follow-up Activity:
Students observe ordinal numbers on calendars at home.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Provide number lines for struggling learners. Use real-life examples for better understanding.
