Topic: Numbers up to 40
Sub-topic: Understanding Addition and Subtraction Facts up to 40
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Identify addition and subtraction facts up to 40
Explore number bonds within 40
Solve simple sums and differences within 40
Previous Knowledge
Students already know how to count, compare, and order numbers up to 40.
Instructional Materials
Flashcards, counters, sticks, number line, textbook.
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher presents a quick game: “If I have 2 apples and add 1, how many do I have?” Learners respond aloud.
Teacher writes simple addition and subtraction facts up to 10 to warm up.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher explains that addition means putting together ( + ) while subtraction means taking away ( – ).
Teacher introduces number bonds: pairs of numbers that make a total.
Examples:
10 = 6 + 4, 12 = 8 + 4.
Subtraction: 15 – 5 = 10.
Addition facts within 40:
18 + 2 = 20, 25 + 10 = 35.
Subtraction facts within 40:
40 – 10 = 30, 28 – 8 = 20.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Learners use counters to practice addition and subtraction.
Learners complete number bond exercises in class.
Learners solve problems on the number line by moving forward (addition) or backward (subtraction).
Assessment Checks:
What is 17 + 3?
Subtract 8 from 30.
Give two numbers that make 20.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Addition combines two or more numbers.
Subtraction removes part of a number.
Number bonds show relationships between numbers that form a total.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher reviews addition facts, subtraction facts, and number bonds up to 40.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Write one addition fact and one subtraction fact for 15. Solve 20 – 5.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):
Write five addition facts and five subtraction facts up to 40 in your notebook.
Follow-up Activity:
At home, learners practice adding and subtracting objects such as pencils or spoons.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Stronger learners solve larger sums, while weaker learners use smaller numbers with counters.
