Topic: Numbers up to 40
Sub-topic: Solving Word Problems Involving Addition and Subtraction

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Apply addition and subtraction facts to solve real-life problems
Use numbers up to 40 in simple arithmetic problems
Work in groups and individually to solve problems

Previous Knowledge
Students already know addition and subtraction facts up to 40.

Instructional Materials
Textbook, flashcards, charts with word problems, counters, picture cards.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks learners simple real-life questions: “If you have 5 oranges and your friend gives you 3 more, how many do you have?”

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher explains that word problems are real-life stories we solve using addition or subtraction.
Teacher demonstrates step-by-step:

  1. Read the problem carefully.
  2. Identify whether it is addition or subtraction.
  3. Solve using numbers.

Examples:
Ali has 12 pencils. He buys 8 more. How many does he have altogether? (12 + 8 = 20).
Mary had 30 books. She gave 10 to her friend. How many books remain? (30 – 10 = 20).

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Learners solve word problems in groups with teacher’s guidance.
Learners act out word problems with real objects.
Learners solve individual exercises from the textbook.

Assessment Checks:
If there are 25 chairs in a hall and 5 more are brought in, how many chairs are there in all?
John has 40 mangoes. He sold 15. How many does he have left?

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Word problems connect mathematics to daily life.
Addition is used when we combine or increase.
Subtraction is used when we remove or reduce.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher reviews steps for solving word problems: read, identify, solve.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Write and solve one addition word problem and one subtraction word problem with numbers up to 40.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
Solve five word problems from the textbook (numbers up to 40).

Follow-up Activity:
At home, learners create simple addition and subtraction stories with their parents.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Weaker learners solve problems with small numbers and real objects. Stronger learners create their own word problems.
