Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher shows a set of family members and asks: “Can we divide this into smaller groups?”
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Definition: A subset is a set that is part of another set.
We use the symbol ⊂ to show a subset.
Example:
Set A = {father, mother, boy, girl}
Subset B = {boy, girl} → children
Subset C = {father, mother} → parents
If B ⊂ A, then all members of B are also in A
Subtraction in sets:
If A = {1, 2, 3, 4} and B = {2, 4}, then A – B = {1, 3}
We remove the members of B from A
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Students identify subsets from a big set (e.g., family members, class members)
Learners practice removing a subset from a main set
Students draw their class as a set, then pick subsets (e.g., those wearing shoes)
Assessment Checks:
Teacher gives a set and asks students to find a subset
Teacher checks correct use of ⊂ and subtraction
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Subset means a smaller group inside a larger set
Use ⊂ for subset
Subtracting a set means removing elements
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: A subset is part of a set. We can also subtract sets by removing elements.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: If A = {1, 2, 3, 4} and B = {1, 3}, find A – B
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):
List your family as a set. Write two subsets.
Follow-up Activity:
Next lesson will apply addition and subtraction using digits.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Use picture charts for students needing extra support. Peer coaching for struggling learners.
