Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
The teacher asks learners: “What are the things you use every day that help you live?” Students mention food, clothes, houses, etc. The teacher introduces the term basic needs of man.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Definition of Basic Needs:

  • Basic needs are the things every person must have to live and survive.
  • They include: food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education, tools for communication, and transportation.

Examples of Basic Needs in Liberia and Other West African Countries:

  • Food: cassava and rice in Liberia; yam in Nigeria; cocoa in Ghana.
  • Clothing: everyday clothes in Liberia; boubou traditional clothing in Senegal.
  • Shelter: huts, apartments, or houses in Liberia; similar traditional homes in other West African countries.
  • Healthcare: visiting hospitals or clinics for treatment.
  • Education: going to school and learning from teachers.
  • Communication: letters, phones, radios.
  • Transportation: motorcycles, bicycles, boats, cars.

Demonstration:

  • Teacher shows pictures of basic needs from Liberia and neighboring West African countries.
  • Discuss similarities and differences, highlighting that all people have these needs but they may look different.

Practical Activities:

  1. Learners match pictures of basic needs to their categories (food, clothing, shelter, etc.).
  2. Role-play visiting a hospital or going to school.
  3. Use flashcards to classify basic needs and discuss why each is important.

  • Classify flashcards into groups: food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education, communication, transportation.
  • Role-play scenarios:
    • Going to school.
    • Visiting a hospital.
    • Using a telephone or sending a letter.
  • Share examples of basic needs from their home or community.
