Grade Level: Grade 10
Week & Period: Week 14, Period III
Date:
Topic: The Factors of Production
Sub-topic: Land, Labour, Capital, Entrepreneurship, and Technology
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
- Define the term “factors of production.”
- Identify and describe the five main factors of production.
- Provide examples of each factor from daily life.
- Analyze the role of technology in enhancing productivity.
Instructional Materials:
- Chart showing the 5 factors of production
- Flashcards with pictures of land, workers, tools, entrepreneurs, and tech devices
- Short videos or animation clips (if available)
- Real-life examples (e.g., hoe, computer, farmland, etc.)
- Whiteboard and markers
Anticipation (Warm-Up):
Begin the lesson with the question:
“Imagine you want to bake bread and sell it. What things or people would you need?”
Allow learners to brainstorm and then connect responses to land, labor, capital, entrepreneurship, and technology.
Building Knowledge (Main Lesson):
Definition of Factors of Production:
These are the basic resources used to produce goods and services. They include:
- Land
- Labour
- Capital
- Entrepreneurship
- Technology
- Land:
- Includes all natural resources: soil, water, minerals, forests, etc.
- Reward: Rent
- Example: Farmland, crude oil fields, rivers for fishing
- Labour:
- Human effort (physical or mental) used in production
- Reward: Wages/Salaries
- Example: Factory workers, teachers, miners, engineers
- Capital:
- Man-made goods used to produce other goods
- Reward: Interest
- Example: Machines, tools, buildings, vehicles
- Entrepreneurship:
- The risk-taker who brings the other factors together to start production
- Reward: Profit
- Example: Business owners, farmers, innovators
- Technology (Modern Add-on):
- The application of knowledge and innovation to improve production
- Role: Increases efficiency and productivity
- Example: Use of tractors instead of hoes; e-commerce platforms for selling
Activities:
- Learners match flashcards to their correct factor of production
- Class discussion: "Which factor of production is the most important and why?"
- Small group task: Identify the factors of production needed to start a school or bakery.
Assessment Questions:
- Define the term "factors of production."
- List the five factors of production and their rewards.
- Give two examples each for land, labor, capital, and entrepreneurship.
- How does technology affect the productivity of labor?
Homework:
- Write a short paragraph describing the role of each factor of production in setting up a local shop.
- Interview a local business owner and identify the factors of production they use in their business.
Expanded Notes for Teacher Reference:
- Factors of production are interdependent. Without one, production may not occur efficiently.
- Emphasize the reward system as it ties economics to real-world incentives.
- Explain that while technology is not traditionally listed as a separate factor, it is now widely accepted as a critical production input.
Differentiation Strategies:
- Provide visual aids and use real-life objects.
- Group learners with mixed abilities to support peer teaching.
- Offer sentence starters for written tasks to support struggling learners.
Teacher’s Reflection:
- Were learners able to correctly match examples to each factor?
- Was the role of entrepreneurship clearly understood?
- Did learners recognize technology as a vital tool in modern production?
