By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  3. Form and apply compound adjectives in writing.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners)

Starter Questions:

  • What words can describe a person or thing?
  • Have you ever seen words like "African dress" or "well-behaved child"? What are they doing?

Think-Pair-Share:

  • Think: Write three describing words for your favorite food.
  • Pair: Share your words with a partner and combine them into compound forms.
  • Share: Present examples and identify proper or compound use.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content)

  1. Definition of Adjectives:
  • Words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns.
  • Example: red car, tall building
  1. Proper Adjectives:
  • Derived from proper nouns and always begin with a capital letter.
  • Examples: Nigerian food, French bread, Liberian music
  1. Compound Adjectives:
  • Two or more words joined together to describe a noun.
  • Often connected with hyphens.
  • Examples: well-behaved child, part-time job, fast-moving train

Formation of Compound Adjectives:

  • Adjective + noun (high-speed)
  • Adverb + past participle (well-written)
  • Noun + adjective (snow-white)

Rules for Hyphenation:

  • Always hyphenate compound adjectives before a noun.

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection)

Class Activities:

  1. Match proper nouns to form proper adjectives (e.g., Germany → German car).
  2. Create five sentences using both proper and compound adjectives.
  3. Adjective hunt: Find proper and compound adjectives in a passage provided.

Assignment:

  1. Write 10 sentences using proper adjectives.
  2. Construct a paragraph (5–7 lines) describing a festival using at least 3 compound adjectives.
