By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Define adverbs and explain their function in modifying verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.
  2. Identify different types of adverbs.
  3. Apply adverbs appropriately in writing and speaking.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners)

Starter Questions:

  • What is the difference between “He runs” and “He runs quickly”?
  • What words tell us how, when, or where something happens?

Think-Pair-Share:

  • Think: Write two sentences about how you do something (e.g., eat, sleep, read).
  • Pair: Share with a partner and identify the adverbs used.
  • Share: Class compiles a list of adverbs from student responses.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content)

  1. Definition of Adverbs:
  • Words that describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
  • Examples: He runs fast. She is very tall. They arrived late.
  1. Types of Adverbs:
  • Adverbs of Manner – describe how something happens (quickly, slowly)
  • Adverbs of Time – when it happens (yesterday, soon)
  • Adverbs of Place – where it happens (here, there)
  • Adverbs of Frequency – how often (always, never)
  • Adverbs of Degree – to what extent (very, quite)
  1. Position of Adverbs in Sentences:
  • Beginning, middle, or end of sentences.
    • Examples: Usually, I get up at 6. He often visits. She speaks softly.

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection)

Class Activities:

  1. Adverb Sort: Learners sort a list of words into adverb categories.
  2. Sentence Building: Write 5 sentences using different types of adverbs.
  3. Role Play: Act out actions (e.g., walk quickly, speak loudly) while classmates guess the adverb.

Assignment:

  1. Write a short story (6–8 lines) using at least one adverb of time, place, manner, and degree.
  2. Underline all the adverbs used in the story.

Assessment (In-class): A. Fill in the blanks with suitable adverbs:

  4. Underline the adverbs and identify their type:
