Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Define and differentiate independent and dependent clauses.
  2. Construct sentences combining both.
  3. Use commas and subordinators appropriately.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • Can a sentence be incomplete on its own?
  • What does “because she was late” mean by itself?

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Independent Clause: Can stand alone.
    • She went to school.
  2. Dependent Clause: Cannot stand alone.
    • Because she was late.
  3. Subordinating conjunctions: although, since, if, unless

Examples:

  • Although it rained, the match continued.
  • She called me because she needed help.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):
Activities:

  • Combine clauses into complex sentences.
  • Identify independent vs dependent clauses in given texts.

Assignment:

  • Write 5 complex sentences and underline the dependent clause.
