Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify and use the three types of conjunctions.
  2. Join sentences using coordinating, subordinating, and correlative conjunctions correctly.
  3. Analyze sentence meaning based on conjunction use.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners)

Starter Questions:

  • What do we use to join two ideas or statements together?
  • Is there a difference between “and,” “although,” and “both...and”?

Think-Pair-Share:

  • Think: Write two short sentences you can join using a word like “but.”
  • Pair: Use different types of conjunctions to combine them.
  • Share: Identify the conjunction type used.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content)

  1. Coordinating Conjunctions:
  • Used to join two equal parts (words, phrases, clauses).
  • FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So
  • Example: She is smart, and she is kind.
  1. Subordinating Conjunctions:
  • Join dependent and independent clauses.
  • Examples: because, although, since, unless, when, while
  • Example: I stayed home because it rained.
  1. Correlative Conjunctions:
  • Work in pairs to link ideas.
  • Examples: either...or, neither...nor, both...and, not only...but also
  • Example: Either you win or you lose.
  1. Sentence Examples:
  • Coordinating: He ran fast, but he didn’t win.
  • Subordinating: She sings although she is shy.
  • Correlative: Not only the boys but also the girls danced.

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection)

Class Activities:

  1. Match sentences to the correct conjunction type.
  2. Sentence Rewriting: Convert simple sentences into complex using conjunctions.
  3. Group activity: Create mini skits with dialogue using at least 3 types of conjunctions.

Assignment:

  1. Construct 3 sentences each using coordinating, subordinating, and correlative conjunctions.
  2. Underline the conjunction in each sentence and label its type.
