Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify conjunctive adverbs in sentences.
  2. Use conjunctive adverbs to connect ideas between sentences and within compound/complex sentences.
  3. Differentiate conjunctive adverbs from subordinating conjunctions.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners)

Starter Questions:

  • What are some words that help transition between ideas in writing?
  • Have you seen words like "however" or "therefore" used in writing? What do they do?

Think-Pair-Share:

  • Think: Read two simple sentences and think of a word that can link them.
  • Pair: Join your sentences using a linking word.
  • Share: Compare and list different linking words on the board.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content)

  1. Definition of Conjunctive Adverbs:
  • Words used to connect independent clauses, showing relationships like contrast, result, sequence, etc.
  • Common examples: however, therefore, consequently, moreover, nevertheless, meanwhile, furthermore
  1. Functions of Conjunctive Adverbs:
  • Show cause and effect: She was tired; therefore, she slept early.
  • Add information: He plays the guitar; moreover, he sings well.
  • Show contrast: She studied hard; however, she failed.
  1. Punctuation Tip:
  • Use a semicolon before and a comma after the conjunctive adverb when connecting two independent clauses.
  1. Examples in Sentences:
  • The students were noisy; consequently, the teacher got angry.
  • I wanted to go; however, I was too sick.

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection)

Class Activities:

  1. Sentence Matching: Match clause pairs using the correct conjunctive adverbs.
  2. Punctuation Practice: Insert correct punctuation marks with conjunctive adverbs in compound sentences.
  3. Conjunctive Adverb Bingo: Students write a sentence using the word called out.

Assignment:

  1. Join the following sentence pairs using appropriate conjunctive adverbs:
    • I was hungry. I made a sandwich.
    • The weather was terrible. We went for a picnic.
    • He failed the test. He didn’t study.
  2. Write 5 sentences of your own using different conjunctive adverbs. Underline the conjunctive adverb used.
