Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Define and identify noun phrases and verb phrases.
  2. Construct sentences using noun phrases and verb phrases.
  3. Distinguish noun phrases from simple nouns.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • What is a phrase?
  • Can you identify the main noun and the words that describe it in this sentence: The tall boy with curly hair ran home?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Students identify the noun and verb in simple sentences.
Pair: Work in pairs to expand each into a phrase.
Share: Share phrases with the class.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Definition of a Phrase: A group of related words without a subject-verb combination, acting as one part of speech.
  2. Noun Phrase: A noun + modifiers.
    • The bright red apple
    • The lady in the red dress
  3. Verb Phrase: A main verb + helping/auxiliary verbs.
    • is running, has eaten, was being seen
  4. Use of noun and verb phrases in context.

Examples:

  • The young man with glasses won the race. (Noun Phrase)
  • She has been working hard. (Verb Phrase)

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):
Class Activities:

  • Underline the noun phrases in a paragraph.
  • Identify and rewrite verb phrases in given sentences.

Assignment:

  1. Construct 5 sentences using noun phrases.
  2. Construct 5 sentences using verb phrases.
  3. In a short paragraph, underline all the noun and verb phrases.

In-class Assessment:

  • Fill in the blanks using appropriate noun phrases.
  • Underline and label verb phrases in given sentences.
