Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Define persuasive writing and identify its purpose.
  2. Recognize and apply persuasive techniques in writing.
  3. Construct a well-organized persuasive essay with supporting arguments.

 

A – Anticipation (Engage learners)

Starter Questions:

  • Have you ever tried to convince someone to do something?
  • What did you say? How did you persuade them?

Think-Pair-Share:

  • Think: Write a time you had to convince someone (e.g., your parent, teacher, or friend).
  • Pair: Share how you persuaded them.
  • Share: Identify words or strategies that made your argument strong.

Prompt for Discussion:

  • Is it better to wear uniforms in school or not? Why?
  • Begin an open discussion where students give opinions and support them.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content)

  1. What is Persuasive Writing?
  • Writing that aims to convince readers to agree with the writer's opinion or take action.
  1. Key Features of a Persuasive Essay:
  • A clear opinion (thesis statement)
  • Logical reasons
  • Supporting evidence (facts, examples)
  • Persuasive language (e.g., must, should, best, important)
  • A strong conclusion
  1. Structure of a Persuasive Essay:
  • Introduction: Present the topic and your opinion
  • Body Paragraphs (2–3): Give reasons and support each with facts/examples
  • Conclusion: Summarize key points and restate opinion confidently
  1. Persuasive Techniques:
  • Emotional appeal (touching feelings)
  • Logical appeal (using facts and logic)
  • Repetition (to emphasize key points)
  • Rhetorical questions (questions that don’t require answers)

Sample Topics for Practice:

  • Students should have less homework.
  • Uniforms should be optional.
  • Mobile phones are useful in classrooms.

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection)

Class Activities:

  1. Model Reading: Read a sample persuasive essay aloud; identify persuasive techniques.
  2. Brainstorming: In groups, learners list reasons for or against a given topic.
  3. Essay Construction Practice: As a class, write a persuasive essay together using a model template.

Assignment:

  1. Choose one of the following topics and write a persuasive essay:
