Specific Objectives: By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  2. Form past tense and past participle of both regular and irregular verbs.
  3. Construct accurate sentences using regular and irregular verbs.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners)

Starter Questions:

  • What is the past tense of the verb “play”?
  • What about the past tense of “go”?
  • Are all verbs changed the same way when talking about the past?

Think-Pair-Share:

  • Think: Write three verbs and their past tense forms.
  • Pair: Discuss if they follow a pattern.
  • Share: Classifies them into regular and irregular categories.

Activity Demonstration:

  • Teacher says a verb; learners give its past tense. Then teacher groups them on the board under headings “Regular” and “Irregular.”

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content)

  1. Regular Verbs:
  • Form their past tense by adding –ed or –d.
    • Examples: walk → walked, clean → cleaned
  1. Irregular Verbs:
  • Do not follow the regular –ed pattern.
    • Examples: go → went, eat → ate, see → saw

  1. Rules and Exceptions:
  • Add –d if the verb ends in “e” (e.g., bake → baked)
  • Double final consonant if stressed and ends in CVC (e.g., stop → stopped)
  • Irregular verbs must be memorized as they don’t follow a rule.
