A – Anticipation (Engage learners)

Starter Questions:

  • What are the differences between adjectives and adverbs?
  • Why do we need both in writing?

Think-Pair-Share:

  • Think: Write two sentences describing a person and an action.
  • Pair: Switch with a partner and underline adjectives and adverbs.
  • Share: Discuss the function of each and revise for clarity.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content)

  1. Review Definitions:
  • Adjectives describe or modify nouns and pronouns.
    • Example: beautiful flower, old man
  • Adverbs describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
    • Example: runs quickly, extremely fast
  1. Common Confusions:
  • Adjective vs. Adverb forms (e.g., fast vs. fastly ✘)
  • Placement in sentences
  • Identifying the word being modified
  1. Practice Sentences:
  • The dog barked loudly. (Adverb)
  • The loud dog barked. (Adjective)
  • She sings beautifully. (Adverb)
  • Her beautiful voice amazed us. (Adjective)
  1. Comparative and Superlative Use:
  • Adjective: tall, taller, tallest
  • Adverb: quickly, more quickly, most quickly

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection)

Class Activities:

  1. Rewrite sentences by replacing weak adjectives/adverbs with stronger or more appropriate ones.
  2. Complete a worksheet categorizing words as adjectives or adverbs.
  3. Peer Editing: Students swap short paragraphs and check for correct usage of adjectives and adverbs.

Assignment:

  1. Write a descriptive paragraph (6–8 lines) about your favorite place using at least 4 adjectives and 4 adverbs.
  2. Underline each adjective and circle each adverb used.
