Topic: Telling Prepositions and Adverbs Apart

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Distinguish between prepositions and adverbs in sentence construction.
  2. Identify when a word functions as a preposition or as an adverb.
  3. Use both correctly in different contexts.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners)

Starter Questions:

  • What is the difference between “He ran inside” and “He ran inside the room”?
  • Can a word act as both a preposition and an adverb?

Think-Pair-Share:

  • Think: Write a sentence with the word “behind.”
  • Pair: Discuss whether it is an adverb or a preposition.
  • Share: Present answers and reasons.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content)

  1. Prepositions vs. Adverbs:
  • Prepositions always have an object. (e.g., He sat behind the desk.)
  • Adverbs do not have an object. (e.g., He looked behind.)
  1. Common Words That Can Be Both:
  • behind, before, after, inside, outside, around, near
  1. Examples:
  • Adverb: She looked around. (No object)
  • Preposition: She looked around the room. (Has an object)
  1. Test Tip: Ask – “What is the word describing?” If it links to a noun/pronoun = preposition. If it stands alone = adverb.

  • Should more examples or peer teaching be introduced?
