Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Define participle, gerund, and infinitive phrases.
  2. Identify each verbal phrase in context.
  3. Construct sentences using verbal phrases appropriately.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • What is the -ing form of a verb called?
  • Can a verb act like a noun or adjective?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Think of three -ing words.
Pair: Determine if they are used as actions or things. Share: Share sentences using the gerunds.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Participle Phrase – Acts like an adjective. Ends in -ing or -ed.
    • Running through the woods, the boy fell.
  2. Gerund Phrase – Acts like a noun.
    • Swimming in the river is fun.
  3. Infinitive Phrase – “to” + base form of verb.
    • To succeed in life requires hard work.

Examples in Sentences:

  • Jumping over the fence, the cat escaped.
  • Eating too much sugar causes cavities.
  • To be honest is important.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):
Class Activities:

  • Match phrases to their function (adjective, noun, or purpose).
  • Fill-in-the-blanks using verbal phrases.

Assignment:

  1. Create a paragraph using at least one participle, one gerund, and one infinitive phrase. Underline and label each.

In-class Assessment:

  • Identify the verbal phrases and state their type.
  • Rewrite sentences replacing simple verbs with verbal phrases.
