Topic: Verbs – Action Verbs: Visible and Mental; Transitive and Intransitive

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Define and distinguish visible and mental action verbs.
  2. Differentiate between transitive and intransitive verbs.
  3. Identify direct objects in sentences.
  4. Use action verbs in sentences accurately.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners)

Starter Questions:

  • What are you doing right now?
  • What are some things you do every day that cannot be seen?

Think-Pair-Share:

  • Think: List 5 actions you performed today.
  • Pair: Share with a partner and identify visible and mental actions.
  • Share: Class discussion on the nature of action verbs.

Mini Demonstration:

  • Teacher performs actions (jump, clap, write) and asks learners to describe the actions. Then says, "I think" or "I believe" and discusses how some actions cannot be seen.

  • Mental Action Verbs: Actions that happen in the mind (e.g., think, remember, understand)
  1. Transitive and Intransitive Verbs:

  3. Sentence Construction: Write 3 visible and 3 mental action sentences.
  4. Role-play: One group mimes actions, another group names and classifies them.

Assignments:

  1. Identify action verbs in the passage below and label each as visible (V) or mental (M):

"James woke up early and remembered his dream. He jumped out of bed, brushed his teeth, and ran downstairs. He thought about the test he would take today and hoped he would do well."

  1. Write 5 transitive and 5 intransitive verb sentences.
  2. Explain in your own words the difference between visible and mental verbs and give two examples of each.

Assessment (In-class):

  3. The children __________ on the playground.
  4. I __________ a new word in class today.
  5. They __________ a cake for their mother.

  • What strategies helped most?
